Building Eco-improvements December 2011 Energy Savings

Last year we managed to reduce our use of non-renewable energy as follows:

This was on the basis of reduced hours and thermostat setting – i.e. reducing heat loss and waste across the site.  As well as helping the global environment we get more money to put to teaching resources.

Main Building Improvements

We have also been blessed that South Glos Council selected us for a new roof and windows in 2011 and this allowed us to double the insulation on the hall and upper roof. The new roof took all summer holidays so the windows had to be done mostly in the Autumn term with some disruption to classes and playground.  With the double glazed windows and better insulated wall panels then we should achieve more energy savings during this winter and into 2012 – but we must keep the doors closed to stop the heat escaping.

New triple glazed skylights too on the new roof.

New resources Rooms and Kitchen

During the summer the “Resources Building” storerooms, used for materials and PE equipment, has been refurbished and upgraded to use as occasional teaching rooms including new double glazed windows and kitchen facilities for the children.

This is a major boost of our educational resources and with additional insulation and heating installation gives us rooms we can use all year round.

With use only for short periods of lessons it was decided to heat the rooms only when needed to save energy so a boost fan system has been included in the refurbishment.

Unfortunately our solar PV arrays we were hoping for has not been achieved that we were hoping would provide the power for this heating.

Looking ahead to 2012

More double glazed window panels will be installed in the main building which will give us further insulation to reduce heating bills. Attention to switching equipment off when not needed, waste heat, closing doors and restricting heating to only when it is needed can yield further reductions which are targeted at 10% over 2011.  It is only with your help we can achieve these targets.

Thank you for caring about our budgets and the planet!
